A technology that identifies water loses including thefts, has been successfully piloted by the Water Services Corporation.
The WSC said in a statement, that a particular case has been identified through this system that involved an individual who was stealing around 35% of the total water fed into a specific Gozitan village.
“Evidence is being formalised and all such cases will be forwarded to the police for further action at their end,” the Corporation said.
It explained that so far this has so far been carried out in two specific water zones and the results are “very encouraging.” The Corporation added that it “can now trace perpetrators remotely and systematically.”
So far, water theft prevention was a very laborious task that involved extensive investigations and human resource, it said.
The project involves the use of new technologies on the ground that feed remote algorithms that are capable of pinpointing perpetrators.
The Corporation concluded by saying that over the next months, the technology used for this pilot will continue to be spread across Malta and Gozo.
