Work has started on the first phase of the Marsalforn Masterplan with an initial investment of around €3 million, the Ministry for Gozo has said today.
In a statement, the Ministry said that this project will be carried out in several phases, with the first phase covering an area of 3,600 square metres, at a cost of around €3 million.
The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana said that after the Marsalforn Masterplan was approved the Ministry for Gozo started the implementation of this ambitious project.
She explained that masterplan for this tourist area has been phased for implementation without disrupting the business community of the area.
Dr Caruana emphasised on the fact that the project will not be just a cosmetic one, but an overall regeneration of the area, with all the services also replaced..
The Minister pointed out that an important element of the Marsalforn Masterplan will include the rebuilding of the breakwater, which, she said, “is a promise that the government is committed to implement.”
She said that, as announced several months ago, the Ministry is making preparations for submitting the application to the Planning Authority as the necessary studies have now reached a conclusive stage.
Dr Caruana also said that the Ministry has submitted an application with the Planning Authority so that the existing Marsalforn parking can be changed “to meet the demand for parking.”
Architect Frank Muscat, who is in charge of the project, explained in detail the rigorous process of work to be carried out in this area which is close to the sea and therefore exposed to the elements.
He stressed that the first phase of this project will involve strengthening the base, after which new services will be laid, followed by the paving.
Mr Muscat explained that, besides the paving, their will be new fishermen services installed, and new street furniture to be enjoyed by the public visiting this area, especially in the summer months.
