Although a substantial number of blood donations are being made on a daily basis, the National Blood Transfusion Service has said that the amount is no longer sufficient to maintain a healthy blood reserve.
It noted that this is happening mainly due to the fact that not everyone who wishes to donate is eligible because of illness and the length of time needed for recovery before they are able to donate.
Faced with this situation the Service is therefore asking those Gozitans who are fit and able, to please make a donation at the next session, which is on Tuesday, the 11th of February, at the District Health Centre in Xewkija, between 1:00pm to 5:00pm (last registration until 5:00pm).
The appeal is also extended to the relatives and friends of those patients still scheduled to have surgery in the coming days.
The Service advised that low blood reserves can have repercussions, including that some operations may have to be cancelled.
In Gozo, the donation centre is located in Triq tall- Hamrija, between the Primary School and the Bocci Club.
For anyone in Malta, blood donations can be made 7 days a week at the Blood Donation Centre, G’Manga, as always it is open from 8: 00am to 6: 00pm.
The Service reminds everyone that it is important to always take your Identity Card, or Driving License or Maltese Passport and to drink plenty of water beforehand.
