The Maltese Church has said that “as a precautionary measure and to avoid possible danger of spread of Coronavirus (COVID 19), pending further directives, Holy Communion wafers will only be given to worshippers in their hands.

The Curia, in a statement, also said that Priests should wash and disinfect their hands thoroughly before celebrating Mass and if necessary, before starting Communion. The same request is also given to Lay People who assist during Holy Communion.

“It is our shared responsibility to take all measures to avoid everything that could otherwise spread disease, especially where there is a gathering of a large number of people such as in churches or church halls,” the Curia said.

It concluded by saying that these directives were issued following advice from health experts.
