A number of local councils will be implementing greening projects in their localities, including Qala in Gozo, with funding from the Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning. This week, MOUs were signed with the Qala, Sliema, Gudja, Zebbug, and Hamrun local councils.

This greening project is part of an initiative by the Ministry with the aim of improving the environment in the zones in which most people live and work.

Areas such as streets, squares and other public spaces that are devoid of greenery and the associated physical and psychological benefits, are selected by the local councils themselves, the Ministry said.

The species of plants are suitable for these sites, based on their environmental conditions, and carried out in accordance with ERA’s landscaping guidelines and may consist of indigenous species or else foreign species that are suitable to our dry climate.

Minister for the Environment Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia said that the time has come to focus on ways in which to improve the environment of our communities.

“While it is all well and good to have zones in more rural areas where families can visit, we need to make sure that green zones are also present at the heart of our localities.”

“These projects are the first step towards the holistic vision for the environment sector, and I am committed to continue working towards a shift in mentality in this regard,” Minister Farrugia said.

Apart from embellishing localities in Malta and Gozo, these trees and shrubs also help to provide cleaner air and have a beneficial impact on the community as well as native fauna, such as birds and insects.

The Minister concluded by saying, “this is just the beginning. We are looking towards a green revolution in the country.”
