Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Dr Chris Fearne, has said that in the past 24-hours no new cases of Covid-19 have been registered, 33 more people have recovered.

Dr Fearne was speaking in a joint press conference on Sunday with Supt of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci.

He went on to say that the directives and measures that had been put in place at the right time had made it possible to achieve these positive results and help stop the spread of the virus.

Dr Fearne added that it always been the aim “not to have a tsunami of cases, but a river,” this success has been achieved because the majority of the people adhered to the guidelines set out by the authorities, he said.

He explained that in the coming days decisions will be made for some of the measures to be gradually relaxed, based on scientific advice.

This could include health services that had been halted because of the virus, Dr Fearne said, with social life and economic activity more gradually restored.

He urged the public to continue following directives from the authorities, and stressed that if the situation with Covid-19 gets worse, any measures that had been relaxed could be put in place again and stressed that anyone experiencing symptoms should call 111.

Prof Charmain Gauci said that there are 448 cases, 162 are active cases, with 282 patients recovered. There have been 4 deaths. In total 28,000 tests had been carried out since the start.

The recovered cases will remain under quarantine for the next 7 days. She stressed that no evidence is available to show that there is immunity from the virus with former recovered patients.
