Producer Price Index increased 1.7% in January

Provisional estimates show that when comparing January 2009 to the corresponding month last year, the producer price index of the sampled enterprises increased by 1.7 per cent.
Monthly changes
In January 2009, producer prices are estimated to have declined by 2.2 per cent when compared with the previous month.
Producer prices in the domestic market were characterised by a 3.9 per cent drop in the Intermediate Goods sector, contrasted by increases in the Energy and the Non-Durable Goods sectors, by 5.1 per cent and 1.0 per cent respectively.
The most significant changes in the export market were observed in the Intermediate Goods sector, which dropped by 6.7 per cent in exports to the Eurozone countries and rose by 1.7 per cent in exports to the non-Eurozone market.
Annual changes
When compared to January 2008, producer prices in the domestic market registered increases for all the Main Industrial Groupings (MIGs). On the other hand, the Eurozone export market registered declines of 14.5 per cent in the Intermediate Goods sector and of 1.0 per cent in the Capital Goods sector.
In the non-Eurozone export market, increases were observed in all the MIGs, except for Consumer Durables, which are estimated at the same levels as January 2008.
