Tomorrow, Sunday, the 7th of June, the 101st anniversary of the events of Sette Giugno will be commemorated in Xaghra.
Xaghra Parish said that, because of the current health directives, the ceremony will be held on the parvis of the church. The Xaghra Historical Reenactment Organisation will also take part between 11.30am and midday.
Mass, which is normally celebrated at 11.00am, will instead be celebrated at 10.30am.
A new monument dedicated to the victims of the riots, which took place on the 7th of June 1919, was inaugurated last year by the then Minister for Gozo Dr Justyne Caruana in Bullara Street, the location of the original dwelling of Guzeppi Bajada, one the victims who lost his life on that day.
The monument is the work of marble maker, Raymond Bonello and designed by Dr Aaron Attard Hili.
On the 7th of June 1919, riots, precipitated by the economic state of Malta post-World War I, resulted in the death of four civilian protesters, including one from Xaghra, Gozo, following shootings by British servicemen.
On that fateful day the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island.
