The Gozo Squash Association recently held the Arkadia Gozo Squash tournament at the Kempinski Health Spa, San Lawrence, Gozo. Over 20 players took part in a tournament full of exciting and entertaining matches.

In the ‘A’ event Carl Camilleri and Peter Wirth, both from the Marsa sports Club, contested the final. The match started at a furious pace with Wirth the player dominating the opening set.

Camilleri found his rhythm mid-way through the second set and started to move Wirth around the court. Both players showed tremendous athleticism, speed and control with some excellent rallies keeping the large number of spectators entertained throughout. Camilleri continued to dominate the remaining games and took the final game 11-5 to secure his first victory in an ‘A’ event and take the Arkadia Gozo Squash title back home to Malta.

The ‘B’ final was contested between Mark Sacco, Kempinski Gozo and Matthew Borg, Cynergi. This was probably the best match of the day.

Borg took the first and third set 11-7 with Sacco taking the second by the same score. The fourth set was extremely close with Borg serving 2 match balls before losing the set 12-10. The fifth and final set saw both players giving their last reserves.

The match remained level at 8-8 before Borg played 3 ‘un-retrievable shots’ to take the Arkadia Gozo Squash ‘B’ event by 3 games to 2.

Gozo Squash Association President Amand P Veranneman thanked Dr. Vijayakumar from the Kempinski Gozo for the excellent service and Mr Antoine Portelli GM and Directors from Arkadia Gozo for their generous support.

Mr Veranneman outlined some of his future plans for Squash in Gozo in the coming months which include a European Squash Federation coaching course, a junior squash day and the visit of a team from the UK in June.
