The Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy – ISSA – University of Malta, has welcomed the launch of the public consultation on light pollution, by the Ministry for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning.
ISSA stressed that “at no point was it involved in the drawing up of this document,” and is in the process of reviewing its contents.
The night sky brightness (NSB) research campaign which is run by ISSA (part of which was published earlier this year) is still ongoing, and ISSA said that it will be providing evidence-based feedback on this public document.
The process of the public consultation is for new guidelines on light pollution for the Planning Authority (PA) and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
The guidelines also propose the inclusion of Dark Sky Heritage Areas on the Maltese main islands, similar to those already designated on Gozo and Comino.
In the meantime, ISSA has said that the public can follow its dedicated NSB page to keep up to date.
