Diving sector businesses are to continue to receive the monthly wage supplement of €800 for the July to September period, the Gozo Tourism Association has said.

In last months economic regeneration plan announced by the Government, The GTA said that it was confirmed that the wage supplement was going to be extended to cover July, August and September.

It noted however, that several businesses had their monthly supplement reduced to €600 from €800. One of these affected businesses was the diving sector, which in Gozo is one of the main niche markets.

The Association said that it had raised this issue both verbally and in writing with Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli and Minister for the Economy Silvio Schembri.

During a meeting last month of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Gozo Affairs, the GTA delivered a presentation about the tourism situation on Gozo and also raised the wage supplement issue with regards to diving businesses.

The GTA confirmed that during last Tuesday’s meeting of the Gozo Affairs Committee, during which it was also participating, Chairperson Dr Justyne Caruana said that the committee had followed up its concerns with Malta Enterprise and the Malta Tourism Authority, with the result that diving businesses will continue to receive the monthly wage supplement of €800 for the July to September period.

Dr Caruana welcomed the achievement, saying that at each and every sitting the committee tries to tackle successfully at least one concern raised and this is done through the agreement of all members. She said that the committee is “truly proving to be effective.”
