Pilots who are still retained in employment by Air Malta have agreed to donate a “substantial part of their salary” to those members of ALPA who were laid off by the airline in June.

The Airline Pilots’ Association – ALPA, said in a statement that it will also be “providing financial assistance in order to ensure that our members are in receipt of income necessary for subsistence.”

The Association stated that “more than half of the members of the Association were laid off on 8th June 2020 and, to date, still find themselves adrift. A good number of these pilots had served with the company for the past twenty years.”

ALPA continued by saying that “notwithstanding, Air Malta´s management team is refusing to engage in effective consultation to resolve the hardship which is being endured by the families of 69 pilots.”

The Executive Committee said that it is “pleased to note that a strong sense of solidarity in the pilot community has, nonetheless, survived these trying times.”

ALPA said that “it is regretted that despite being called upon to do so, Air Malta has not provided any justification for its failure to take the necessary measures in order for our members to receive wage supplements which would have ensured the retention of all our members in employment.”

ALPA concluded by calling on the airline “to engage in meaningful discussions in order to ensure that a long-lasting solution is found in the interests of both parties.”
