The Holy Week in Gozo is dominated by several activities, processions and exhibitions in all localities around Gozo, which attract many people from every corner of the island, as well as from Malta.

Activities start today, with a procession with the statue of Christ The Redeemer around the main streets in Victoria.

The washing of the disciples’ feet ritual marks the liturgical celebration of Maundy Thursday, which is followed by the traditional devotion of the visit to seven churches.

There are those who prefer to visit churches in Victoria or in their village, whilst others opt to go around the island in churches, convents and chapels, which are specially adorned for this liturgical function.

Five parishes organise Good Friday processions, mainly the Gozo Cathedral and St George’s Basilica in Victoria, together with Nadur, Xaghra and Zebbug.

Several are those parish or catechism centres that exhibit The Last Supper table or other sacred exhibitions, organised by several dilettantes. These add to the devotion during these holy days, whilst serving as an added attraction for several visitors who choose to spend these days in Gozo. The Resurrection of Christ is celebrated also by processions held on Easter Sunday, with the statue of the Risen Christ. These are held amongst others in Victoria, Xaghra and Nadur.

It is expected that as in previous years, many Maltese will be visiting the island of Gozo and join the Gozitans in the devotion and celebrations during these days.

Earlier today the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, held a meeting with the Heads of Departments and other entities to ensure that public order, security and cleanliness may be appropriately coordinated during these days.
