Two juvenile flamingos have been released at the Ghadira Reserve, with the participation of Kaccaturi San Uberto.

One had been retrieved on the 24th of August by one of it’s hunter members that manages the Ghadira s-Safra Natura 2000 site and the other by another hunter.

KSU said that both birds were handed over to the E.P.U. Environment Protection Unit (formerly known as the ALE) and passed on to BirdLife Malta for rehabilitation.

At this time of year it is quite common for young birds to separate from their flock during migration, KSU said. Due to the lack of suitable habitat and food such exhausted birds need human intervention to build up their fat reserves to carry on their migration towards Africa.

KSU explained that when finding such birds, hunters or members of the general public are to phone the Environment Protection Unit on telephone on 119 giving details of the location, type of bird and should remain with the bird until the arrival of the police.

Kaccaturi San Ubertu concluded by asking for everyone’s cooperation to safeguard all protected bird species.
