“The number of take away pizzas is ever growing. They all come in a separate box. Sometimes after not being able to eat the whole pizza at the restaurant one asks to have a box to take the pizza home for breakfast.
Most of the time the bottom of the box is contaminated by oil and it is not good for recycling. Pity, because the cardboard seems good.
If the pizza is topped up well or handled roughly the top of the box might get soiled with the Mozzarella etc, with the whole box is ruined and only fit for throwing in the black bag. What a waste!
Is there a solution to this problem so as to keep the box clean and recycle it? I only could think of one solution, which is to place wax paper in the bottom of the box and on the top of the pizza.
One would throw away the paper if soiled or wrap their lunch for work the next day. The box is clean and can contribute to the cardboard bulk for recycling.
Just a thought.

Cardboard can be recycled very easily for compost even printed cardboard if the print is not toxic, most inks these days are plant based and any residue ” food ” is quite acceptable. Sadly there is no Government provision for recycling garden refuse. You could add grass cutting, leaves, bushes, tree branches and the like . But no everything goes to tal-Kus for landfil, what a waste. It saddens me every time I go there. What goes into landfill is really absurd.Come on Gozo Ministry another step towards ECO Gozo please.
The problem is not the food residue but the grease. The paper fibers, soaked in grease, cannot bind during recycling. However, corrugated cardboard, broken into small pieces, can be used in compost.
