Gozo has once again been ranked as one of the top 100 sustainable tourist destinations in the world by the Green Destinations Certification Programme for 2020.
In 2018, Gozo won the prize of best sustainable destination in the Mediterranean, also awarded by Green Destinations, an international organisation which promotes sustainable tourism.
The Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development within the Ministry for Gozo nominated Gozo for this year’s award, and following a scrutiny exercise to determine the qualities of the destination, together with effective practices in terms of sustainable tourism, the Top 100 Global Sustainable Destinations also included Gozo in the Good Travel Guide.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, while welcoming the news said that, “this will continue to give us courage to work harder in every field, especially in the tourism sector, so that the island of Gozo continues to be the destination of choice for many.”
“I am proud that the natural beauty of Gozo continues to attract visitors and that the work of this government continues to translate into positive results for our country,” he added.
Director of Tourism and Economic Development within the Ministry for Gozo Ronald Sultana, listed the six evaluation criteria in order for Gozo to be ranked among the best destinations; Destination Management, Nature, Scenery and Animals, Environment and Climate, Culture and Tradition, Social Wellbeing and Business and Hospitality.
Minister Clint Camilleri reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensure Gozo continues to receive the attention it deserves with quality infrastructure and promotional campaigns aimed at making it an attractive destination.
He stated that the tourism sector will also continue to be boosted thanks to various funding schemes administered by the Ministry for Gozo, including co-financing in the field of restoration and improvement of sites, among others.

Malta is too overcrowded already and tourists do not like crowded beaches and crowded stores.
Sure they will be coming to see our concrete buildings now.
Yes, when people come back from visiting Malta, they say it looks like an overbuilt prison.
Nobody likes crowds. The more crowded Gozo gets, the least tourists it will attract. Its just common sense. With all the construction that has been built and continues to be built, after returning from Malta, people have said that Malta looks like an overbuilt prison.
Carmela unfortunately you can bang your head against the wall time after time but greed will always win. With this present government who dont seem to care what the islands are turning into as long as development carries on paying the bills. Its a sorry state
The people should protest peacefully in front of the politicians homes. That way, they will understand what it feels like to be overcrowded and noisy. The people can do this non stop until the person in charge changes his or her mind or have no other choice than to step down. The people always will win if they do this because the politician will get not get reelected. Just remember to do this peacefully.
No one taking a bus in Gozo or Malta should have to stand. Everyone should be seated. No tourist likes crowds.
