The Nationalist Party has said today that the same promises are made year after year for Gozo by the Labour Government, “but never carries them out.”

“Just this week at the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) joint Gozo Regional Committee meeting, the Labour Government through the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri boasted how much work it is doing in terms of accessibility to Gozo,” the PN said in a statement.

The Opposition said that it has noted how many Gozitans “are no longer taking the Government seriously on this very important subject.”

It added that this is because the Government has “unfortunately failed to deliver on its promises in the last seven years.”

Land accessibility:

“The permanent link between the islands is always mentioned, however it is not started.

An alternative road to the port of Mgarr to better manage traffic.

Accessibility by sea:

Fast Ferry which has now been changed for a simple hop on hop off service.

The fourth new ship that was replaced by an old one, not suitable for our sea nor is it accessible to everyone.

Cargo ship facility leaving from the Valletta area, to avoid the carriage of goods to Cirkewwa with the consequences of traffic, pollution and extra costs.

Cruise liner terminal

which remained on plan

New buoys at sea near Mgarr and Xlendi to link the cruise liners that remained “just a nice speech.”

Yacht marina

a new one that also remained a dream.

Air accessibility:

Airstrip

to land planes, even those from abroad, to attract rich tourism direct to Gozo.

Inter-island helicopter service that has been announced for over a year and has not yet started.”

On the eve of the Budget, the Nationalist Opposition recalled that many of these promises about Gozo, like many others, have appeared in Labour Government budgets, time after time “and will probably reappear in the next one.”

The Opposition concluded by saying that if the Government wants to be credible when it comes to accessibility for Gozo “it must stop repeating the promises and instead let us know how many of them it will fulfil in the current legislature.”
