The Xlendi Tower restoration project was launched this morning by the Munxar Local Council through an investment of around €355,000 in European Funds.
Present for the launch was the Mayor of Munxar Damien Spiteri together with the members of the Local Council. Also present was the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Mr Giovanni Zammit as a representative of Wirt Ghawdex and the Architect of the project Mr Hermann Bonnici.
Mayor Damien Spiteri, explained how over the years the tower had fallen into a very bad state of disrepair and that the Local Council will be benefiting from European Funds for this restoration project on what is in fact the oldest Tower on the Island of Gozo.
The Mayor went on to say that the work will include both exterior and interior restoration, together with the construction of an interpretation centre and investment in solar panels.
Mayor Damien Spiteri concluded by thanking all those involved in this project and stressed that the Council is committed to continue attracting such European and local funds in order to continue investing and changing the face of the village.
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, praised the initiative of the Munxar Local Council. He reiterated how this investment of around €355,000 through European funds will bring the Xlendi Tower back to life and will be another valuable tourist destination on Gozo.
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, reiterated the support of the Ministry in projects of this scope. He listed the major investment being made in infrastructure on Gozo and stressed that more European funds will be spent in Gozo, so that the island can continue to move forward.

Restoring the tower is a good thing but whats the use when Xlendi has become a block of cement and when it rains a little bit everything gets flooded. The incompetence in planning is mind blowing .
Back in the 60’s when I was a little girl, I can remember walking up to the tower on many occasions. At that time, one could faintly see medieval frescos painted on the wall on the left as you entered. I hope this will also be restored as part of this project.
