The Menqa regeneration project has been inaugurated in Marsalforn with an investment of around €1 million

Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who carried out the inauguration, explained that new services were installed for the sewerage and water system as well as those related to communications.

A concrete base was then laid, followed by porphyry paving in front of all the Menqa establishments as well as a new road paved with lava tiles. In addition, part of the quay wall was rebuilt in order to make it easier for fishermen to moor their boats.

The Minister remarked that “this has resulted in a pedestrian zone of the highest calibre, adding value to all those who visit Menqa – tourists, residents, restaurant customers, as well as Gozitan fishermen who access their boats from here.”

The Minister for Gozo added that this is not the end, because after the completion of the Menqa project, the regeneration of the Marsalforn waterfront has now also begun. He promised that this project will be completed before the summer season next year, with an overall investment of €3 million.

This Marsalforn waterfront masterplan includes lava porphyry paving of Triq il-Port, Triq il-Forn, Triq San Guzepp, Triq ir-Rabat and Sir Michelangelo Refalo Square as well as the installation of new lighting and street furniture to give the area a “contemporary look.”

The Minister went on to say that “in line with government policy to encourage the adoption of more “environmentally friendly modes of transport and a healthier lifestyle,” access to the promenade will be pedestrian, with the only access for vehicles that are permitted to provide a service.”

He pointed out that through this investment, the Government is recognising the efforts made by the private sector to transform Marsalforn into a tourist and leisure hub.

In addition, he said that through this intervention, “the Ministry for Gozo should stimulate more investments to ensure the competitiveness of the local tourism industry which represents about 50% of Gozo’s direct economic production and which is responsible for about 20% of the jobs created on the island of Gozo.”
