The Malta Union of Teachers has said that it is deeply concerned that the change in leadership of the Ministry of Education should not be interpreted as though there is a failure in the education sector.

The Prime Minister at the weekend, announced the new Cabinet in which Justyne Caruana replaced Owen Bonnici as the new Minister for Education.

The union insisted that that educators and students should not be “victims of political decisions that have nothing to do with education.”

“The educational sector is far from failing,” the MUT said in a statement on Tuesday. “This is evidenced by the hard and continuous work of educators, who since March have worked both from home, as well as in classrooms during the reopening period of the schools to ensure that students continue to receive quality education during the pandemic.”

The MUT concluded by saying that it “expects the new Minister to continue to work and build on all that is good in the sector, especially on what was achieved during the pandemic, so that schools continue to be helped and the work of educators continues and is carried out in a context that ensures the best health and safety measures.”
