Yesterday’s inauguration of the second fibre optic cable between Malta and Gozo has been warmly welcomed by the Gozo Tourism Association.

In a statement, the Association said that it is confident that this long-awaited project will “definitely enhance and increase the digital infrastructure in Gozo.”

“Gozo’s double insularity cannot only be mitigated through sea, air and permanent links. But also, with projects like this digital infrastructural investment that will augment Gozo’s connectivity, opening up the island for potential private investment and job creation in the digital sector,” said the Association.

It added that “this second fibre optic cable is another step in establishing a sound footing for digital economy for the Island Region of Gozo.”

Following on from the measures now taken towards digital connectivity, the Association also urged the Government to “continue in its efforts to improve further the inter-island connectivity through, the sea link and the much needed airlink.”

The Gozo Tourism Association maintained its conviction that Gozo’s Gross Domestic Product cannot remain so reliant on the tourism sector, adding that it “believes that more steps and initiatives are to be taken in order to diversify the Gozitan economy.”

It concluded by saying that “this second fibre optic cable will definitely support and facilitate the spread of the Gozitan economic activity, while creating new job opportunities.”
