There were 94 new Covid-19 cases recorded in the past 24-hours, 1 death and 110 recoveries, making the total number of active cases now 1,606. The number of swabs taken over this period was 3,558.

This takes the total number of cases up to 11,569 There have been 9,780 recoveries and now 183 deaths, the Ministry said. 479,097 swab tests have been taken since the start of the pandemic in Malta.

Superintendent of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, in her weekly update advised that another death had been registered, a 92-year old man, who passed away yesterday at the St Vincent de Paul Long-Term Facility.

Prof Gauci said that the 7-day moving average stands at 84, adding that the number of active cases is decreasing. However, she stressed that the public must remain vigilant as the virus is still spreading within the community.

The average age of positive cases in the past week has been 25-34, and mainly females.

In Gozo, there are 55 active cases from the current 1,606, she said.

She said that in total there are 186 Covid patients in hospital, there are none currently in the Gozo General Hospital. In Malta there are in Mater Dei Hospital; 18 in ITU, 12 in IDU and 39  in other wards of the hospital. Then there are 5 in Boffa, 9 in St Thomas, 0 in Karin Grech, 84 in the Good Samaritan Longt-Term Care Facility and 1 in Mount Carmel.

Prof Gauci explained that the Covid-19 vaccine is set to be approved on Monday, saying that the public will be informed by the Health Authorities regarding the schedule of when and to who the vaccinations will be administered, with those in elderly care and frontliners, the first to be expected receive it. The vaccine will not be compulsory for anyone.

A campaign will be started regarding the vaccine, to provide further details for all.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has advised that as from yesterday it will be reporting figures on a weekly basis – every Thursday. The latest figures as of week 50, show that the number of cases recorded for Malta is at 11,254 and the number of deaths showing is 174. The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 is 304.3 Malta is currently in 23rd position in the EU/EEA and UK. Croatia is at the top with 1208.8.

Public Health Authorities said that anyone who needs to take a test should call 111 to set an appointment, even if they do not have any symptoms. It is to be noted that due to the large volume of calls, it can take some time to get through.

All swabbing centres are open every day, including the one in Gozo, however appointments must be made on the above number.

The Ministry of Health, while offering its condolences to the relatives of the family who has passed away, called on the public to continue to follow the preventive measures so that we can protect the most vulnerable in our society – This includes wearing of masks, social distancing and hand hygiene.
