Update – In a change of decision, the Government has now said that as from tomorrow – Tuesday, the 22nd of December, flights to and from the UK will be suspended.

Only a couple of hours earlier, it had been announced that passengers arriving on flights from the UK as from tomorrow would have to quarantine for 14 days.

In a statement, the Health Minister Chris Fearne explained that this is in light of the new variant of Covid-19 that has been found in patients in that country.

Despite the suspension of flights, Maltese, and persons resident in Malta, who are currently in the UK will be given the opportunity to return to Malta, however, they will be subject to a PCR test upon their arrival in the country and for a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

This is a temporary decision, he said, because the Maltese health authorities are closely following developments in the UK while also participating in discussions with the European Union on this situation.
