Nadur Youngsters F.C. has announced with great sadness the death of the first foreign player to ever play for the Club, Mr György Handel (Season 1993/1994).

Hungarian, György Handel passed away in his home country on Saturday at the age of 61 from Covid-19.

Nadur Youngsters F.C. described him has a “prolific” goal scorer, “György was undoubtedly, one of the best players to ever wear the shirt of Nadur Youngsters.”

“Thank you for your service! Condolences to all the family – May he rest in peace.”

Also paying tribute, PN MP Chris Said that he was shocked to hear this morning of the death of György Handel – a Hungarian who had played football in Malta and Gozo for years.

He said, “shortly after I became President of the Gozo Football Association we wanted to improve the level of football in Gozo and therefore we changed the regulations so that foreign players were able to play.”

Said went on to say that Handel was the first foreign player to be brought to Gozo and remains one of the best of all time. He helped the Gozitan team he played for win promotion after promotion.

“But György was also a friend we kept in touch with.” Said added that, “he visited Gozo often and on the two visits I made to Hungary I found him waiting there.”
