A €2.2 million scheme has been launched today to help bar and club owners who have had to remain closed due to restrictions linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The scheme is aimed at providing financial assistance to establishments falling into three categories:
Commercial bars licensed with the Malta Tourism Authority may apply for a maximum of € 2,870.00, bars that form part of an association or club up to a maximum of € 1,860.00, and all other associations that are registered with the Commissioner of Police with the exception of political clubs, can apply up to a maximum of € 1,260.00.
This incentive will be covering the period from the 28th of October 2020 to the 28th of February 2021.
The scheme was launched by the Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo, in the presence of the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Recreation and Voluntary Organisations Clifton Grima and the Chief Executive of the Malta Tourism Authority Johann Buttigieg.
Minister Clayton Bartolo said that, “it is no secret that the hospitality sector has been the hardest hit in this pandemic. Thousands of families who depend for their livelihood on this sector still make sacrifices even if the challenges they are going through were not created by them or this government.”
The Minister also spoke about how enforcement by the MTA will be increasing during February in a number of areas around Gozo; Nadur, Marsalforn, Xlendi and Victoria, while in Malta it will include Sliema, St. Julian’s, Paceville and St. Paul’s Bay.
He went on to say that any abuses by establishments would not be tolerated and that telephone number 21692447 would also be made available for the public to report such abuses.
Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima said that through this scheme, hundreds of sports clubs and voluntary associations that have a bar operating within them, will be able to continue their work.
Chief Executive of the Malta Tourism Authority Johann Buttigieg said that applicants must submit the application between the 1st and 15th of March, while anyone wanting more information should send an email on bcscheme@visitmalta.com or call the Malta Tourism Authority on 2291500.
