The Church in Malta and Gozo will not be organising pilgrimages, processions and demonstrations during Lent and Holy Week this year.
In a statement, the Archdiocese of Malta said that this decision had been made in keeping with responsibility for the health of Maltese and Gozitan people in these times of the pandemic.
The Church said that it encourages the Christian people to hear the Word of God during Lent, to gather in prayer and do charity. “The Church is committed to providing opportunities for Christian people to do so through its various entities.”
It went on to say that it will continue to assess the public health situation and will later issue directives on how the liturgy of the Easter Triduum should be celebrated.
The Bishops of Malta and Gozo concluded by saying that it urges everyone to “continue to observe the directives for health protection in order to really take care of each other.”
