In a joint statement from the Ministry for Justice and the Ministry for Gozo regarding comments by the Nationalist Party on the Gozo Court, they pointed out that the Gozo Court had remained working, with regular hearings, even though the country was going through a pandemic.

So much so that in the criminal field, in district hearings, 570 district cases were decided from the beginning of the pandemic to the end of the year. In the same period 49 compilations were decided, the statement said.

It went on to say that in the civil field in the same period, 128 civil cases were heard and 72 sentences were handed down. “The figures compare very well with those of 2019.”

The Gozo Court building is always under the supervision of members of the security and executive police, the statement said.

“The government is aware of the challenges of this court, so much so that a few days ago it met with all the senior officials of the court administration, including those in Gozo,” it said.

The statement concluded by saying that, “it is safe to say that even at the time of the pandemic an unprecedented investment was made in the area of justice. The same will continue to happen on the island of Gozo.”
