The Third Joseph Vella Memorial Lecture is to be delivered by Rev Professor Saviour Caruana OSA at Il-Hagar museum.

Professor Caruana – an international Augustinian expert – will be delving into an aspect of one of Augustine of Hippo’s works. He wrote the treatise De Musica towards the end of the fourth century, treating music as a speculative science.

He was concerned with the philosophical and mathematical principles integral to enjoying music, believing – as widely held then – that music affected the soul and so could influence our ethics, actions and morals.

The lecture is among the events prepared to commemorate the third anniversary of Mro Vella’s demise, incorporated within a whole programme – celebrating the cultural centre’s eighth anniversary. The programme is being supported financially by the Gozo Ministry’s Cultural Directorate.

All are invited to “The Effects of Music on Augustine in De Musica 6.” however, the museum advised that Covid restrictions limit capacity.

The lecture is taking place on Saturday, the 27th of February, starting at 10.30am. Il-Hagar is located in St George’s Square, Victoria.

Those interested are encouraged to reserve seats by writing to events@heartofgozo.org.mt.

Besides permanent exhibits, Il-Hagar hosts various temporary exhibitions too, including an exhibited oval which is used for the poster background.

Entrance remains free during the normal opening hours of 9am to 5pm, seven days a week.
