Members of Gozo Spacelab said that they were very lucky to be in the right place at the right time – to watch three Nature Trust Rescue Wildlife Volunteers – Marvic Refalo, Betty Berry and Jess Mercieca Morgan – who were on a special mission at Dreams of Horses Farm in Xaghra.

Their load? A colony of eleven prickly-but-cute hedgehogs that needed relocating to safer grounds and where better than the fertile valley of Ta’ L-Ghejun? Which is home to a biodiversity of species all living in harmony.

As dusk drew in on Gozo last Friday the volunteers gently laid the hedgehog down at the margins of the farm, close to undergrowth that would shelter them as they started life in a new habitat.

Spacelab and Nature Trust – FEE Malta said that some smelt the wild instantly and ran off within seconds, others took their sleepy-time to sniff the air and toddle off after a while.

“Il-Qanfud” is a protected species in Malta. Listen out for tips by Marvic on what to do if you come across a hedgehog in daylight.

The hedgehogs were released after been checked and weighed by the volunteers of the Wildlife Rescue Team in Gozo.

The team was alerted to them being in danger via a call on the 24/7 emergency line 9999 9505 for the Nature Trust Wildlife Rescue Gozo section.
