A public consultation process for the Marsalforn breakwater project has been opened to the public, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri has said.

He explained how this ambitious project forms an integral part of the masterplan that has been drawn up for this tourist area which is so important for Gozo, with an application submitted to the Planning Authority for Gozo for the rebuilding a breakwater and rubble groynes to protect this beach from the elements.

This project is a major phase in the Marsalforn masterplan, following the generation of the Menqa area and the ongoing work on the Marsalforn waterfront, the Minister said.

Minister Camilleri stated that, “all this will lead to a solution so that, while protecting Marsalforn beach from the sea, we do so sensitively and with minimal visual impact.”

As part of the application process, the Environment and Resources Authority has requested that an Environmental Impact Assessment be carried out.

The ERA, has a consultation that is open to the public – for the criteria on which this Environmental Impact Assessment should be based. Sediment samples will be taken from the seabed in the coming weeks, the Minister said.

The Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri concluded by saying that the Ministry is committed to finding the best solution to protect the beach from the power of the elements that in the past caused great structural damage to the beach as well as to tourism operators in the area.
