275 new professionals were employed for the start of the new school year, these include KGE (kindergarten educators) and LSEs (learning support educators) with 566 other professionals having their contracts extended, Education Minister Clifton Grima said.
On Monday, the 25th of September, 7,712 state school educators return to their workplace, then on Wednesday, the 27th September 27th, 28,757 students spread from the first year of primary to the eleventh year of secondary start the new school year.
5,942 Kindergarten students begin their school year on the 2nd of October, making a total of 34,699 students that have started back in state schools.
The Education Ministry said that “the new school year will start after a full summer of preparations ranging from administrative and academic to infrastructure and digital projects.”
During this school year there will be 2,410 free school transport routes, of which 925 are for state school students. A total of 32,833 students from kindergarten to secondary (13,774 state and 19,059 Church and independent) will benefit from this service, the Ministry said.
It went on to say that during the summer 12 major educational infrastructure projects have been completed by the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools with an investment of € 20 million.
There are a further 4 projects with work still ongoing through an investment of €53 million, making a total investment in educational infrastructure of €73 million, the Ministry said.
These are apart from an investment of one million euros on 514 other maintenance projects carried out over the summer by Ministry workers.
The Information Management Unit has carried out work in the digital infrastructure sector with the completion of 57 projects, including the placing of Interactive Flat Panels, digital infrastructure improvement and the creation of computerised systems that both educators and students will benefit from.
Minister Clifton Grima concluded by saying that, “this was not only infrastructure work, but also work in the digital and technological sector to further improve the educational experience.”
