Gozitans still waiting for their first inoculations

Gozitans still waiting for their first inoculationsImagine the massive sigh of relief from the near-bankrupt tourist industry on learning that “Malta, Gozo and Comino” are due to reopen to vaccinated British tourists from June 1.

So desperate are we to get them in and spending money that they won’t even be delayed by having to be tested for the virus on arrival at Luqa.

Good for Malta. As are most government decisions. Not so good for Gozo, though, where the over 75s are still awaiting their first inoculation.

They were first told on FaceBook – assumed to be the best way of addressing Gozitan septuagenarians – to phone in and make an appointment.

Most of them, I assume, went through the same rigmarole: wait ten minutes for your call to be answered, and then name, address, ID, home phone, mobile… only to be told that you would be getting a letter “in the coming days.”

The question has to be asked: Who is sending the invitations and on what basis? It is not in alphabetical order, nor according to ID number, not village by village – and certainly not by age. Are they sent by Identity Malta, by the Ministry of Health, or (as it would appear) like a lottery by “lucky dip”?

Enquiry defeats even those who expect routine Maltese inefficiency in most things. There is no point in asking the Helpline, whose employees simply confess to not knowing whether there is a “system.”

The call to phone for an appointment was repeated last week by Professor Charmaine Gauci, who presumably doesn’t know what’s happening, either.

So I hope that the tourists who flock in with their viruses will not, in fact, be allowed on either Comino or Gozo.

If they do, and if they mix with the locals, we will have to start serious lockdowns all over again. And we know how the last one started.

That would mean goodbye to tourism, for another year…

Revel Barker,

Ghajnsielem.

I have given up ringing 145, not because of difficulty in getting through, I got answered straight away each time, but the answer is always wait for a letter or text which never comes. I am beginning to think that if your ID ends with an A and you live in Gozo your are at the back of the queue with new ‘at risk groups’ being forever pushed to the front. I am 75 and still waiting whilst the call has gone out from Sahha for the over 60s. I know that a different vaccine is being used but the Pfizer one could be given quicker to the elderly if fewer resources were diverted to younger healthier recipients.
Also why is it that Malta will not use the Astra Zenica vaccine for over 70s when the WHO and EU medical comitee have said it is perfectly safe, indeed France and Germany have specified it should only be used for OVER 60s/65s

As a 60+ UK Citizen in Gozo, I received my first vaccination on 17th March
I was then sent an SMS message yesterday from Mater Dei to attend on 10th April at Victoria HC for my 1st Vaccination???? SMS does not give any way to respond so I cannot provide feedback to cancel this appointment
Someone needs to do a proper database setup for the government department responsible with a simple three column layout (ID, 1st Vac Date, 2nd Vac Date)… Anyone with no 1st date can be called (contact details held in a separate database) and the columns can be colour coded to indicate completion
        Otherwise appointments will be wasted

No, Ray – it’s not the A suffix. Aliens under 75 on Gozo have been called in, and some native-born Grannies are still awaiting the call.
I called again today and was told that (contrary to what we had been told) the helpline was not able to make appointments – only to register my details (which I dictated for the umpteenth time. I was told I would be invited “within the current month” – so now it is not even “within coming days!)

Similar to James, I’m early 60s and received my first dose 3 wks ago at the Aurora with 2nd dose due 10 weeks after. Then I got an SMS yesterday with new dates for 1st and 2nd doses, this time at the Health Centre. I called 145, got through with less than 5 mins wait and the person said he would send the details of the new dates back to the HQ to be cancelled and reassigned, and that it would not affect the original date of my 2nd jab.
