Health Minister Chris Fearne has announced that as from Friday, people aged 40 and over over could start applying for the Covid-19 vaccine.

Registration can be done both on the website https://vaccin.gov.mt/ and via SMS giving the ID number only on 99180045 to receive the vaccine in Malta, and 99180044 for Gozo.

Minister Fearne called on everyone to apply for the vaccine so that our country is in a position to achieve herd immunity as soon as possible.

He explained how in our country so far 46% of the population has been vaccinated with a single dose, while 21% of the population have been given a second dose.

Dr Fearne advised that this week 3 cases of the Brazil variant have been registered for the first time, all were imported, and they are all in quarantine.

He added that genetic screening would be increased, however he provided no further details on the 3 cases.

The Deputy Prime Minister also referred to the situation of Covid-19 around the world, where the severity of the pandemic has not yet subsided in a large number of countries.

“This is in contrast to the situation in our country where the vaccine is working, so much so that the number of positive cases in hospitals is still at a very low level, and even the Good Samaritan facility is empty because they have fallen sharply.,” he said.

He also announced that today he was authorised to use the fourth Covid-19 vaccine – Johnson & Johnson in Malta, following the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency that it is safe, and the consignments that were distributed across Europe by the company itself were released, including the consignment that arrived in Malta at the end of last week.

Further measures to be released from Monday

Dr Fearne went on to say that as the numbers of Covid-19 cases reported per day and the numbers of people admitted to Mater Dei Hospital remained low and stable, it will be possible to release a number of measures as from next Monday.

This will enable the opening of non-essential shops, as well as museums, and outlets to resume non-essential services from their respective premises.

The number of people in the same group allowed in public will increase to 4, while in private residences people coming from a maximum of 4 different residences can be gathered.
