Two Qala local councillors have welcomed Partit Nazzjonalista’s pledge to buy the area around Hondoq ir-Rummien.

They said that on Wednesday, the Malta Independent revealed that the Opposition plans to buy the land from its private landowners and turn it into a national park if its elected to government.

A party spokesperson said the party would acquire the land in question to rehabilitate and develop it into a national park.

The proposal was welcomed the PN minority leader Karl Buttigieg and councillor Valerie Cassar Mejlak, both elected on behalf of PN to the Qala local council.

They noted that the PN’s proposal includes the regeneration of the area and the necessary ancillary facilities.In their statement, the councillors explained that the government only owns the sandy beach and a part of the BBQ area at the bay. The rest of the beach is privately owned by a company that acquired the land from other private owners in 2002.

The new land owners proposed a massive development consisting of turning the area into a port and yacht marina along with a luxury village consisting of a 195 bedroom hotel and 300 apartments.

Prime Minister Robert Abela maintained that the government’s hands are tied when it comes to changing local plans.
