Reconstruction work carried out on the Cirkewwa pier by Infrastructure Malta has now been completed.
This was announced during a visit to Cirkewwa, by Ministers Ian Borg and Clint Camilleri.
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg explained that this €1.6 million project saw the reconstruction of the 100-metre pier, which will now offer protection to fishermen in bad weather
Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri thanked Minister Ian Borg for his cooperation with the Ministry and Infrastructure Malta on the pier project which will be able to be used in the coming weeks and months.
Due to extensive damage, this pier could not be used as another berth for the Gozo Channel ships. The project of reconstruction was started last summer by Infrastructure Malta and involved the demolition of most of the quay above the water and then extensive underwater repairs.
It was explained that the agency has also completed what are known as fender blocks, which also include safety walls to prevent accidents where sailors could fall from a height while tying. The new deck of this pier, of more than 2,300 square metres, is at a higher level as a safety measure due to the strong waves.
This pier is now being transferred to Transport Malta and also to Gozo Channel to take care of the service between Cirkewwa and Mgarr so that it can be used in the coming weeks and months.
