The Nationalist Party has reiterated its pledge to buy the area around Hondoq ir-Rummien if it was elected to Government.
In a statement on Saturday, the PN said that it is sending a clear message that a new Nationalist Government would make a difference for the environment
This was the key message of the Nationalist Party spokesperson for the Environment and Climate Change Robert Cutajar and Gozo Spokesperson Chris Said, to mark World Environment Day.
The proposal, announced earlier in the week, had been welcomed the PN minority leader Karl Buttigieg and councillor Valerie Cassar Mejlak, both elected on behalf of PN to the Qala local council.
They noted that the PN’s proposal includes the regeneration of the area and the necessary ancillary facilities.
Speaking today, Robert Cutajar said that the proposals submitted by the Nationalist Party and which will continue to be submitted in the coming days, are “guaranteeing the Maltese people a better quality of life with the environment being a key area.”
“Unfortunately, not a day goes by that you don’t hear or read stories of the environment in our country being under great threat. This is not the environment that was promised in 2013 by the Labour Party,” he said.
Chris Said said that this week the Nationalist Party stated that it is ready to take action over the land near Hondoq ir-Rummien beach in Qala so that it becomes public land and is given to the Gozitan and Maltese people
He said that the Party would acquire the land in question to rehabilitate and develop it, particularly the part where the quarry was located and transform it into a national park for the enjoyment of the public.
“This is the future we want to give our country, particularly in the island of Gozo. More open spaces for the public and that can enjoyed by all. There is a lack of such spaces in Gozo,” he said.
Chris Said recalled how a Nationalist Party-led Government had started the Family Park project at Qortin in Xaghra. “Plans were made to turn it into a Family Park, however, to date, some eight years later this is still not done despite many promises by the Labour Government.” He argued that “in eight years no public spaces have been created for the public in Gozo.”
