The Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS) has said that recent excavation works on site of the new Primary School and the existing Middle School in Victoria revealed an ancient quarry, possibly dating back to the Roman Period.

FTS explained that his discovery is even more of interest as the quarry complex discovered to date covers a vast area of over 5,000 square metres, some of it still covered by the surrounding school complex.

It went on to say that according to the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH) a matter of utmost interest is that in the case of Gozo, little if any such features were recorded and therefore these quarries would be the first properly recorded discovery of Classical period quarrying in Gozo.

Other features discovered within the site could also have had a burial context and are being investigated.

Archaeological excavations on site are being carried out by archaeologists commissioned by the FTS under the supervision of the SCH. To watch the video please click here.
