In a press conference in its Sliema offices, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party presented its local council candidates for the 6th of June elections, which includes Victor Galea who will be contesting Gharb in Gozo.
Prof Arnold Cassola, AD Chairperson, said, “If elected, AD’s local council candidates will represent quality in the local councils of B’Kara, Gharb and Sliema. The experience of Green Councillors has shown that one councillor can make a big difference in local councils. The examples of Sliema, B’Kara and Attard, clearly show that Green councillors frequently propose policies that enhance the quality of life of residents and which result in consensus amongst local councillors from different political parties. AD councillors have this privilege as the Green party has no ties to interests such as big business or construction lobbies.”
“In Gharb, Victor Galea will be contesting for the first time, but Victor Galea’s constant defence of residents’ rights in Gozo needs no introduction. Mr Galea’s role in Green politics was fundamental in the introduction of the ‘Eco-Gozo’ concept.”
“In Sliema, Michael Briguglio has been an elected local councillor since 2003 and is aiming to be elected for the third consecutive time. In itself, this shows Mr Briguglio’s impact in Sliema. Mr Briguglio has been highly influential in Sliema council, introducing reforms such as frequent consultation with residents, successful objections to overdevelopment proposals, and introduction of alternative energy sources.”
“In B’Kara, Mario Mallia, contested once and was elected, between 2003 and 2006. Through Mr Mallia, the Local Council became closer to residents and also introduced various social, cultural and educational campaigns in addition to defending residents’ rights.”
Prof Cassola added that Green Councillors work in a non-partisan manner. “The representation of AD in local council adds a further dimension in local council for the improvement of residents’ quality of life. AD’s role in the European Greens has also brought about various results for localities through pressure on an EU level.”
Commenting on the MEP election campaign Arnold Cassola said that AD’s consistency and credibility on quality of life issues is second to none. He said, “I wish to thank two leading experts and environmentalists for endorsing AD’s candidates for the European Parliament. Prof. Edward Mallia, an energy expert, physicist and environmentalist and Engineer Marco Cremona, a hydrologist, expert in eco-technologies and environmentalist both publicly expressed their trust in AD and think that an AD MEP can make a real difference for Malta and Gozo. I am glad that AD’s credibility in quality of life issues has been confirmed by leading personalities in the sustainability and eco-technology sector.”

Gozo needs the diversity brought by having Local Cllrs from more than just the two traditional parties; the debate broadens which is always a good thing. With climate change and a recovery from the recession as the main agenda items AD/Green Party representation on Councils will urge fresh yet objective paths forward. The one thing we can be certain of is that the post recession economy will not be the same as the one that has failed. It will not be heavy industry for sure, far more likely is something more self sufficient which is what Green Parties understand. Support them.
Victor Galea’s candidacy for the Gharb local council election is one of heavyweight calibre, characterised by steadfast assiduity and result-focused decisiveness.
A gifted negotiator and consummate consensus builder, his manifest managerial talent, coupled with dynamic organizational flair, both at local and national level, amply qualify him for this role.

The environment is not just what is around us, but we, the people, build, influence, destroy it, and therefore threaten ourselves.
One of the essential tasks is to make people aware of this fact. If we save our environment and establish sustainable projects, we save ourselves and improve our standard of living. Victor Galea is the person to transport this message, and help bringing this awareness not only to the Gharb population.
