New free system for hunters and trappers to report their catchA new free system for hunters and trappers to report their bird catches, has been announced by Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.

The Minister explained that it consists of a free automatic telephone system that offers easy guidance by following the instructions on how to make the report.

He said that this new system means that licensed hunters and trappers will be able to “easily report bird catches and the dates on which they went out to hunt or trap during the open seasons.”

These would be in accordance with the legal obligations attached to the licenses, in accordance with the fourth Schedule of the Subsidiary Legislation on wild birds an rabbits, the Minister said. The Minister added that “all this builds on the success of the catch reporting telephone system introduced in 2014.”

“For those hunters and trappers who use a smartphone, the mobile app ‘Game Reporting MT’ can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play,” Camilleri said.

He explained that the phone system and mobile app will also include a new reporting obligation; the dates on which one went hunting or trapping even if nothing was caught, a “so-called hunting effort.”

WBRU section chief Richard Lia said that, “although there are over 10,000 licensed hunters and 4,000 licensed trappers, there are those who think they will all be hunting or trapping throughout the season.”

“The hunting effort is needed to confirm the fact that this is not true, and absolutely not to reduce, in any way, any dates of the seasons,” he said. “This information is essential for government authorities to be able to prepare scientific reports that are factual and truly reflect the local situation of hunting and trapping on our islands.”

Mr Lisa concluded by saying that “direct information from the hunter and trapper will be shown with the facts, where it will be translated directly for the good of the hobby.”

The new number, which will only be accessible to licensed hunters and trappers, is 8000 2020.
