Alternattiva Demokratika have said that they have not stopped in their consistent efforts to ensure that Gozo is transformed into an Eco-Island opening up a large number of job opportunities in the Energy, Transport, Touristic and Environmental sectors, amongst others.
During a recent visit to Gozo, accompanied by the Green M.E.P. Claude Turmes, Arnold Cassola AD candidate for the European Parliament elections, stressed on the need for the State to encourage and provide all support to all those entrepreneurs who are actively interested in investing in a wide range of new and innovative technological sectors connected with Eco-Gozo.
The AD delegation met Mr Dietmar Treptow, a German based in Gozo, who has launched a new company in Gozo called ‘Planet Solutions.’ Among its wide range of eco-friendly services, this company is promoting street lamps which work on solar energy and therefore are not only energy efficient but also environmentally friendly.
Victor Galea, AD Secretary General, expressed his disappointment when, on asking the Chairman of Enemalta about the cost of installation, energy and maintenance of a standard street lamp, no reply was ever given. Mr Galea stressed on the importance that, “If the Government truly believes in investing in alternative sources of energy, it should be fully updated on the actual and precise cost of every power and light supply unit and that this information be readily accessible to the public. This is the only way that the public can be informed how much it stands to gain by opting for alternative energy-saving measures.”
Mr Claude Turmes, Green MEP from Luxembourg, said, “It’s of the utmost importance that the Government should learn how to work hand-in hand with everybody where the national interest is at stake. The vast experience and effective contribution which the European Green Party has consistently provided to the European Parliament can be of immense benefit to the Maltese and Gozitan population if the electorate votes in favour of a wider representation in the EU parliament rather than Malta remain being represented in just two groups. As a result of the big challenges that confront us in the wake of the global financial crisis and climate change, the concept of Eco-Gozo should not remain just an electoral promise but become a reality and start materializing itself.”
Arnold Cassola concluded by saying, “Throughout our MEP campaign, Alternattiva Demokratika has highlighted the importance of the Green New Deal, which basically focuses on concrete measures which will lead to the the creation of millions of job opportunities all over Europe in a wide range of sectors, such as agriculture, food production, transport, tourism, construction and energy. Gozo will be among those small regions which will reap the greatest benefit from these investments. Hence the importance of the election of an AD candidate to the EU Parliament to ensure the support of the Group of the European Greens and Gozo gets what it rightly deserves.”
