A one-storey building opened in 1958 will now be given a completely new and modern look so that the students and educators of Zebbug Primary School, Gozo, have an appropriate and comfortable environment, this will be carried out through an investment of €3 million, the Education Ministry has said.

Education Minister Justyne Caruana, while explaining details of the project said that, “apart from improvements in strategies and also measures that are being introduced in the education system, we will also continue to improve the infrastructural environment.”

She said that the project involves extensive upgrade of the existing primary school and is intended to offer modern, accessible and comfortable educational spaces for students and educators.

In addition to the extensive work to be carried out both the interior and exterior of the school, the project will include the redesign of open and recreational spaces, as well as the creation of new spaces for teaching extracurricular subjects.

New services will be installed as part of the project, including electricity, water and sewerage service, security cameras, internet connectivity, alarm and fire safety services. The school will also have new furniture that further encourages inclusion in teaching.

The Minister added that as is being done in all the schools that are being refurbished, energy efficient measures will also be introduced in the building as required by law.

The primary school in Zebbug, which forms part of the Gozo College, was designed by Architect Joseph Huntingford and opened in 1958. The building is spread over about 2,300 square metres.

So that the work can be carried out at a fast pace and for the safety of children and educators, teaching will be provided in temporary classrooms in the same existing school premises. This will be done so that children can continue to learn in the same school environment to which they are accustomed, the Minister said.

The planning permits have been issued by the Planning Authority and the tender will be published in the coming weeks, the Minister said.

This project is being run by the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools. Also present at the launch of the project were the Head of School Sandra Casarini, the Chief Executive of FTS Neville Young and the Mayor of Zebbug Nicky Saliba.
