78kg of illegal smokeless tobacco and 53,259 heets tobacco sticks has been seized by Customs this year.

The Customs Department in a statement, said that in the continuous fight against contraband products, between January and September it has seized 389,900 cigarettes amounting to €11,359 in market value.

The endangered taxes of the lot amounted to €65,430 in excise duty, €14,868 in VAT and €6,276 in import duty, Customs said.

As for tobacco, 20kgs of the substance, which amounted to a total of €467 in market value, was confiscated. The endangered taxes of the lot amounted to €676 in excise duty, €295 in VAT and €272 in import duty.

78kgs of smokeless tobacco and 53,259 pieces of heets tobacco sticks were also confiscated during the first nine months of this year. Customs said that both of these tobacco products are illegal in Malta as per Legal Notice 67.
