PL Leader, Joseph Muscat today visited the National Blood Transfusion Service Centre in G’Mangia. During his discussions there he stated, “The criteria for blood donation should not be based on sexual orientation, but on risk factor. It should not be based on a perception but on scientific evidence. Definitely, discrimination based on sexual orientation is not acceptable.”
The Labour Leader spoke of a number of countries which included the United Kingdom and Mexico that have removed discrimination based on sexual orientation, saying “we should examine these models.”
He thanked the management and the employees working at the Centre for their valuable work. He also stated that during his visit he was happy to see that several people were donating blood.
When he was asked whether incentives should be given to encourage organ and blood donation, Dr Muscat said that” if any incentive is given, this should be marginal, so as not to create a market in which the most vulnerable people take part.”
Godfrey Farrugia and Martin Ellul Mercer, both PL candidates accompanied Dr Joseph Muscat during this visit.
