Local residents and others from around Gozo turned up at Hondoq Bay at midday today to show their support in the fight to save the bay from the developers.
Various NGOs also joined them, including Moviment Graffitti, to protest against the proposed development of a commercialised yacht marina in the bay, a saga which has been ongoing for the last 19 years.
Qala Local Council Mayor Paul Buttigieg had urged everyone who loves the area to attend – at the time of a ”site visit” by members of the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal – who are to decide on the fate of Hondoq.
Moviment Graffitti said, ”we are here because today the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal is visiting the Hondoq site to decide on the appeal filed by the applicant.”
It went on to say that also present was ”Gozo Presitige lawyer Carmelo Galea, who is also involved in the saga of the dubious registration of entire tracts of land in Gozo.”
”Shamelessly, Gozo Prestige is opposing the decision to reject the huge development application that will be condemning Hondoq to utter ruin,” said the NGO.
It argued that, ”the Mayor has long insisted that Hondoq ir-Rummien be declared a public domain by Parliament and given the protection it deserves under the local plan so that it is never again threatened by development.”
Moviment Graffitti concluded by saying that, ”we fully support the residents and the Qala Local Council in this fight and hope that the Planning Tribunal does what is fair and appropriate.”

What a shame people didn’t object this much about the destruction of Xlendi – it’s too late now.
True Story! And a real shame. Lets hope that the people who vote are heard, and that Hondoq is given the protection it deserves. Well done to all who attended!
