Rapid and timely interventions needed in fight against the pandemic - PNThere is a ”need for rapid and timely interventions in the fight against the pandemic,” the Nationalist Party said on Sunday.

It called for ”strong serious action and transparent decisions, as well as enforcement of measures to reduce the spread in the community, even in view of the reopening of schools in less than a fortnight.”

In a statement, the PN stressed that, ”our country is going through a strong Covid-19 wave. The Omicron variant is much more infectious than its predecessor with the number of active cases rising daily, with a record number of cases.”

As a result, it said that, more patients are being admitted to Mater Dei with an increase in patients in need of intensive care and increased pressure on frontline services and healthcare.

The increase is also leading to the cancellations of operations, appointments and treatments. A situation that is adversely affecting the sick and the needy, the PN said.

It added that a faster roll-out booster offers more resistance and a stable herd immunity.

”This must be accompanied by testing without delay and efficient contact tracing.” The PN stressed that ”more testing sites are needed, as well as more human resources to complement the contact tracing team.

There is a need for a ”serious system of responsible self-testing that can be registered with the Public Health Authority. This reduces the overload of both PCR and rapid testing in the community, as well as to have a rapid test at the end of the quarantine,” it said.
