Two thirds (67%) of new Covid-19 cases currently sequenced in Malta are now Omicron, Health Minister Chris Fearne said on Twitter on Monday.
He stressed that ”vaccination with booster doses remains vitally important.”
Speaking on the 23rd of December following a surge in new cases, Dr Fearne had revealed that the first two cases of the Omicron variant had been detected in the Mater Dei labs during the previous hours, and were from people who had tested positive days previously, ”leading them to believe that the increase in community transmission was from the variant.”
At the time, he explained that while Omicron is far more transmissible, ”evidence suggests that it is not more severe, with protection for the public from the booster vaccine.”
From that date onwards the number of daily cases increased, with a record number of cases of 1,403 cases on the 31st of December. Currently there are 13,260 active cases in Malta and Gozo, with 120 patients in hospital.
