27 localities, including 8 in Gozo, have benefited from a scheme issued by the Local Government Division, with funding of around € 670,000, in order to continue helping local councils to develop and maintain open spaces for recreation in their respective localities.

In Gozo, the localities that have benefited from the scheme are Fontana, Ghajnsielem, Gharb, Munxar, Nadur, San Lawrenz, Xaghra and Xewkija.

Minister for Local Government José Herrera said that sport and recreation are very important factors in helping a person to live a better quality of life. Therefore, through the scheme, families will be able to socialise in a safe and accessible place for all.

He added that the Ministry is also re-issuing the same funding scheme for all local councils.

The Director General for Local Government, Natalino Attard, explained that last year the scheme was issued for local councils to develop and improve playing fields in their localities.

He added that, “after evaluating the submitted applications, there were 27 local councils that had their application accepted.”

The localities in Malta that are benefiting from this scheme are Valletta, Senglea, Cospicua, Zabbar, Zejtun, Kalkara, Qormi, Gudja, Hamrun, Siggiewi, Mellieha, Attard, Balzan, Iklin, Lija, Msida, St. Julian’s, St. Venera and Sliema.
