In celebration of the feast of St Paul’s shipwreck on Thursday, Heritage Malta will be opening several museums and sites which are not usually accessible to the public due to the currently reduced opening hours brought about by the pandemic situation.
In Gozo, these will be the Gozo Citadel sites and the Citadel Visitors’ Centre; Ggantija and Ta’ Kola Windmill.
The sites in Malta are – Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum; the National Museum of Archaeology; MUZA; Fort St Angelo; the Tarxien Temples; St Paul’s Catacombs; Hagar Qim and Imnajdra.
St Paul’s Catacombs – named after the celebrated saint himself – will feature roaming re-enactment actors dressed as Roman soldiers, and a collection of statues of Saint Paul traditionally displayed in Maltese homes in celebration of the feast.
Since honey was a staple in Roman times, visitors of the catacombs will also have the opportunity to purchase the award-winning honey produced by bees kept at some of Heritage Malta’s sites. Exclusive artisan jewellery will be on sale too.
The sites will be open from 9am until 4.30pm on Thursday, the 10th of February. Normal admission rates apply. Students and seniors are encouraged to make use of their Heritage Malta passports.
