The Association for the Gozitan Employees working in Malta (AGEM) has said that it is still receiving a number of complaints with respect to the lack of trips by both fast ferry companies between between 5pm and 7pm.

Virtu Ferries Gozo and the Gozo Fast Ferry have both updated their timetables applicable from 1st March onwards for trips between Valletta, Malta and Mgarr, Gozo.

In a statement, the Association argued that AGEM workers hailing from the private sector as well as from the civil service who finish work at 5 pm or afterwards are being left stranded according to the current schedule.

It stated that “this situation is not acceptable – where workers are left to wait for an average of two hours to catch the next available fast ferry, or else enter into the expense of catching a taxi to Cirkewwa in order to arrive home at a decent hour.”

“It is not acceptable that in this day and age after a hard day’s work, a worker should take more than two hours to commute between the two islands,” said the Association.

AGEM pointed out that “this service was introduced to cater better for the needs of Gozitans workers who work in Malta.”

“Unfortunately after more than eight months in operation, there are still a number of valid complaints that clearly show that the service is still not addressing in a consistent manner the needs of workers who commute daily,” it said.

AGEM said that it is “once again drawing attention of both companies as well as the political candidates who are currently contesting the thirteenth district “so that this situation is rectified as soon as possible.”
