According to the National Statistics Office, during the first quarter of 2022, the number of new dwellings approved in Gozo and Comino increased by 35.7%. There were 412 approved in the first quarter last year, while this year the number stood at 559.

The highest number of approved new dwellings were issued in Zebbug with 102, followed by Victoria 90, Ghajnsielem 63, Sannat 54, Gharb 48, Nadur 43, Xewkija 43 and Xaghra 38.

It noted that although Ghajnsielem and Comino are classified as one locality, no building permits were approved in Comino.

On a national basis, during the first quarter of 2022, 609 building permits for a total of 3,203 new dwellings were approved, the NSO said.

It noted that when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, the number of building permits and approved new dwellings increased by 25.8 per cent and 59.6 per cent respectively. The average number of approved new dwellings per building permit stood at 5.3.

The majority of new dwellings approved during the first quarter of 2022 were apartments (2,284), followed by penthouses (468), maisonettes (330), terraced houses (92) and other residential units 1 (29). Apartments made up the lion’s share (71.3%) of the total number of approved new dwellings.
